Practicum

For practicum students, direct hours are earned through hours at our community partner organization, The Patchwork School.

Direct client hours occur in one of their three programs (toddlers, preschool, or kinder) alongside the teachers as “Social Emotional Support Staff.” In this role, Practicum students support children with social and emotional challenges, including conflict resolution with NVC and utilizing play-based therapy skills one-on-one or in groups.

Practicum students are also mentored and observed by Supervisors. Non-direct hours are spent in training sessions with the practicum cohort, and by reading and watching training materials.

  • Direct Client Hours at The Patchwork School: 4-5 hours per week
  • Non-direct Hours at Louisville Family Center: group supervision and trainings
  • Triadic weekly supervision (10 sessions).

Internship

Internship students complete their direct hours at Louisville Family Center and at one of our Partner Schools (The Patchwork School or Acorn School).

LFC interns learn to manage their clients from start to finish (including intake, therapy and termination). Students can focus on working with a particular population (ex. children, teens, adults or couples) or they can take a mix of different clients.

Most of the interns’ clients will be on Medicaid or other insurance so interns will learn to navigate both private pay and insurance.

  • Direct Client Hours at Louisville Family Center: 10-15 hours a week
  • Direct Client Hours at Partner School: 4-5 hours a week
  • Non-direct Hours at Louisville Family Center: group supervision, progress notes, trainings
  • One-on-one weekly supervision

The Patchwork School is an innovative non-profit organization promoting children’s rights and meaningful educational options for all, at the heart of which is a community-based democratic school for young children, located in Louisville, Colorado. The school’s emphasis on social-emotional well-being for staff and students is a great match for counseling students working to deepen their understanding of non-violent communication and self-regulation practices that support children in learning these tools, as well. Besides internship and practicum, Louisville Family Center also partners with The Patchwork school to offer parent & staff workshops, as well as other resources and support for the families and community of the school.
Acorn School
The Acorn School is a nurturing and supportive community dedicated to fostering the holistic development of children. Their emphasis on valuing, respecting, and nurturing each child reflects a commitment to creating a positive and conducive learning environment
The commitment to supporting social-emotional skill development is crucial, as it helps children learn to express their emotions in a healthy manner, contributing to their overall well-being. Encouraging children to take risks and discover their abilities with guidance shows a commitment to fostering a growth mindset and building confidence.  LFC also offers social emotional workshops for Acorn Staff and parents.
